Where the power goes
Announced capacity at full build, by region. The United States alone accounts for more than half of everything on this map.
And the water
Cooling is where a data centre meets the local water table. There is no single right number here, so pick the assumption and watch it move by an order of magnitude.

How this is worked out. Announced capacity × 8,760 hours × 80% load gives the electricity; multiplying that by litres-per-kilowatt-hour gives the water. That last figure — water usage effectiveness — is the entire argument. An evaporative-cooled hall can drink close to 1.8 litres per kilowatt-hour; the closed-loop designs now going up are filled once and use almost nothing after that; hyperscaler fleets report somewhere in between. Sites on the seabed or afloat reject their heat into the sea or a river and draw no fresh water at all, so they are left out of this figure while still counting toward the electricity. This counts only water used on site. The water consumed generating the electricity is a separate and usually larger number, and none of it is in here. And nothing on this map runs at full build yet — this is the bill if it all does.

How this map is made
Read the numbers as orders of magnitude
Every entry is compiled by hand from public announcements, operator newsrooms and trade press. Capacity is the figure announced for the site at full build — not what is energised today. Operators quote these numbers inconsistently: some mean IT load, some mean gross site power including cooling. A 1 GW campus in a press release is a promise, not a meter reading.
A few sites are pinned to the nearest named town because the exact parcel has not been made public; those are drawn as hollow circles and flagged when you open them. Announced sites get cancelled, shrink, and slip — several on this map already have.
